“This is indeed a glorious moment,” said Li Chenjian, a vice provost at prestigious Peking University. “This also is an acknowledgement to the traditional Chinese medicine, for the work began with herbal medicine.”
Tu Youyou received a Nobel prize for medicine today in Stockholm! This is the FIRST Nobel prize to go to traditional Chinese medicine. Times are turning to look to nature for help with disease and well-being. This is an exciting day in history!
Inspired by ancient Chinese texts, Youyou produced artemesinin in the 70’s, a drug that is now the top treatment for malaria. The team discovered that a compound from the wormwood plant was highly effective against the malaria parasite.
The committee says this development has given mankind a valuable tool. This also is an acknowledgement to traditional Chinese medicine, for healing with nature and providing an honest way of health. I hope that this highest acknowledgement will help pave a place for Chinese medicine and herbs in Western medicine, especially the U.S.
