New York State of Mind

There’s just something about New York City that brings everyone together. Described as the Big Apple, the City that Never Sleeps and the Concrete Jungle, New York City is the modern forum for opportunity. As ‘Ol Blue Eyes once crooned, “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere!” Here are three optimal odes from various music genres and generations to the Queen, herself.

1. “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli

“I’ll make a brand new start of it in old New York
If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere.”

Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli are New York personified. They are the class, the dazzle and the show. Their stage presence together is nothing short of magical. It is no wonder their music transcends age. Everyone from grandparents to grandchildren will get lost in “New York, New York.”

2. “Empire State of Mind” by Jay Z & Alicia Keys

“I’m the new Sinatra,
and since I made it here I can make it anywhere.”

Jay Z and Alicia Keys succeed Frank Sinatra and Liza Minelli in a 21st Century epic remix. The New York State of Mind evolves to an Empire State of Mind, spending five weeks at number one in the US Billboard Hot 100 and breaking many top ten lists internationally. In its prime, you couldn’t change the radio three times without entering the empire.

3. “Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel

“Uptown girl
She’s been living in her uptown world.”

The third best-selling US artist, Billy Joel sings songs about New York inspired from his move from LA. This feel-good toe-tapper will sweep you into an Uptown romance. It’s a slightly sweeter romance than Drake’s TMZ Uptown: “Now she’s famous and paparazzi starts to shoot her.”

Admittedly, I skipped through Time Square smiling and singing Joel’s tune. Surely, I’m not the only one!

Music makes the most impact when it defines a moment, transports you to an emotion and provides a time-capsule to a feeling. This is the essence of its universal appeal. These three songs provide five-minute vacations to a New York City where anything is possible, and that’s something we all can sing.
