Nas: the Illmatic 20th Anniversary
Long Live Hip-Hop
A warm breeze blew across Cosmopolitan hotel’s rooftop concert paradise, the Boulevard pool, on October 17th, 2014. Here Nas celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Illmatic, his debut agapic album. Who said hip-hop was dead?
Nas’ tour complements his introspective documentary, Time Is Illmatic, and launch of 12AM RUN urban boutique with fellow sneakerhead and entrepreneur, Nick Sakai. The store sits in the Linq forum, along the world famous Las Vegas Strip and surrounded with fresh street art by IGA artists; while the film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this past spring.
Onstage, iconic lyrics remind us “I know I can/ Be what I wanna be/ If I work hard at it/ I’ll be where I wanna be.” Following lines boasting doctoral dreams and architect aspirations encourage future generations to pursue education. At one point mid-show, Nas references Bob Marley’s ‘One Love’ philosophy as a full crowd surrenders to the music.
Refreshing atmosphere, refreshing passion, and refreshing lyrics: Nas’ 20th anniversary of the Illmatic is the past, present and future of hip-hop.
